Message from the Artist: One evening I found myself listening outside my son’s door, pausing from an evening of chores and personal tasks. This image came to me and I was forced (happily so) to put my chores aside and head to the studio to begin sketching! Originally, the left hand was placed on her belly, as mine was as in real life (I believe she was subconsciously touching her stomach, thinking of her child) – however, after struggling to allow her hand to stay on her belly without her looking pregnant, I decided to give her left hand some more purpose. Her left hand has now become a place for laundry to hang on its way to the laundry room. How true to life! This painting takes another step toward recreating moments of everyday life.

Message from the Artist: I was reading Twyla Tharp’s book The Creative Habit one day and I was suddenly gripped by an impulse to grab my largest canvas and start this painting – despite the fact that I was planning to do just a little reading before bed! I felt the emotion pulling from my chest as I quickly worked the composition onto the canvas – sitting on the floor because the painting area in my studio was already crowded with other paintings. As I worked, I felt my brush and my thoughts and the intensity healing me, feeding me, from the inside out – it’s a hard feeling to describe. There was intensity around this painting, still is – and I feel a certain kind of heat in my heart when I “read” it. Based loosely on Swoon, it took me a bit, after completion, to tap back into the initial intense urges in order to uncover the title for this painting. This is interesting because frequently my paintings begin based upon an arrangement of words.

Message from the Artist: I recently discovered a man named Bruce Elkin, a Canadian writer who has in a few articles worth of reading, helped to make the idea of creating the life I want very doable. He points out that problem solving doesn’t achieve goals, creating does. I read one of Bruce’s articles one day while my boys were sleeping, and despite my former urge to do some file-organization on my computer, I went straight to my studio to work on this painting. Realizing that I will only reach my goals if I focus on creating the steps that will get me there, versus trying to fix things that bug me. Bruce writes “creating is about focusing on what you do want [versus what you should 'fix'], and bringing it into being”. I have written this down by my computer – as a way to get me away from the computer and back to the studio on those days when the computer is sucking the life out of me! This painting challenged me as I kept pushing ahead with a stroke here and there until it became what I knew it could become. Someone recently used the word ‘ethereal’ to describe my work ~ I hadn’t heard that before ~ but to me, this painting feels ethereal. this original is in the collection of Alma Midwifery, Portland Oregon

Message from the Artist: Not all is peaches and cream in a home with small children, and sometimes I wonder if I’m a hypocrite by painting only those sweet moments. This piece is heavy for me – I fall from grace and bark at my little ones occasionally… For a variety of reasons I’ve asked my children to forgive me and they me. I believe in the power of forgiveness. Page 91 in “You Can Heal Your Life” by Louise L. Hay hit home for me in this mention: “when we are stuck, that usually means there is some more forgiving to be done. When we do not flow freely with life in the present moment, it usually means we are holding on to a past moment. It can be regret, sadness, hurt, fear or guilt, blame, anger, resentment, and sometimes even the desire for revenge. Each one of these states comes from a space of unforgiveness, and refusal to let go and come into the present moment. Love is always the answer to healing of any sort. And the pathway to love is forgiveness. Forgiveness dissolves resentment…” What a fantastic book. In this painting, the mother is very nearly looking toward the sky, as if to confirm the forgiveness that she is either giving or receiving.

Message from the Artist: I believe that children should have lots of “time-in” with their parents, especially if “time-outs” are going to work as discipline. Originally, I was going to call this painting Time In, but after working closely with it and experiencing the dream-like quality, I decided Life Is But A Dream was more fitting. The title has a couple connections for me: besides the dream-like colors and textures of this piece, dreams can be beautiful, and sometimes hard to remember.

Message from the Artist: Over the years I have witnessed the way parents and children interact and how it has become commonplace for there to be an obvious and devastating detachment between them. These experiences have caused me recently to step back and re-view my relationship with my kids and what is important to me and what matters most in the big scheme of things. Reading A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle and Voluntary Simplicity by Bruce Elgin have encouraged these thoughts as well. I’ve always studied Attachment Parenting and over the last couple of years I am finding myself flowing with Voluntary Simplicity – these two philosophies really click for me ~ an outwardly simple life and rich internal life, allowing time to just “be” with children and not always “be doing”. The simple act of appreciating a child for who they are, their minds, their sweet little bodies, and giving to them your time, attention, your real, honest focused self. This is hard, I know first hand, but worthwhile and life changing.

Message from the Artist: I had been working on this composition and I adored the way the figures came together, but there was something missing… while working on a commissioned piece, I had a big blob of green paint left over and decided to introduce these figures to the green. Suddenly, my previous love of creating mermaids came back and I found myself very much enjoying the process of adding detail and sparkle. My previous mermaids were very detailed and whimsical. Along with birds and Chinese painting techniques – whimsical details are characteristics that I want to re-introduce into my current style.

Message from the Artist: Milk is the symbol of the first aspect of love, that of care and affirmation. Honey symbolizes the sweetness of life, the love for it and the happiness in being alive. Most mothers are capable of giving “milk,” but only a minority of giving “honey” too. In order to be able to give honey, a mother must not only be a “good mother”, but a happy person… Erich Fromm (1900-1980) American Psychoanalyst I was intensely inspired by the above quote. Therefore, the child in this painting is well-loved, comfortable, pink in the face from play and affection. The mother – not only does she love the dickens out of her child, but she is also pursuing that which makes her a happy person. There is a fine balance, I think, in knowing where it’s okay to draw the line with one aspect of life (“right now I’m going to take a break from playing, honey”), so that you can give some attention to the other – thus helping one to feel like more of a whole person. I’m in the process of learning this right now.

Message from the Artist: I must say, I’m still captivated with how bodies can fit together, especially those of mother and child. In answer to recent questions – at this time I am not using photos from life as reference – I paint from my sketches and my sketches from my head and my soul. For me, certain parts of a body may be manipulated slightly, if it means representing the emotion more effectively.

Message from the Artist: One night when my son was sick, I held him in the beanbag – opening my pajamas a bit to allow us to have skin-to-skin contact – I believe in the healing power of intimacy! I began this painting as a demonstration during a speech at the Women Entrepreneur Organization’s (WEO) February meeting. The appreciation, respect and support that I received that night while speaking and painting for the group was phenomenal and inspiring. I completed this painting in my studio, realizing that based on the response I received that night, I am indeed doing what I should be doing.

Message from the Artist: When I was pregnant with my first son, but didn’t yet know, I woke up one morning with an undeniable urge to reorganize the office closet. As I busily worked, it occurred to me – “maybe this is what nesting is ~ maybe I’m pregnant?” Inspired by a recent and particularly bad hair morning, and my pre-painting days of creating detailed nests with colored pencil, Nesting was born. My idea of nesting here revolves around the mother’s protective instincts and awareness, ~ watching ~ planning and preparing a safe, clean and suitable world for her unborn child. My children are growing fast, but I still love to nest. I “felt” my way into this painting – led by intuition and emotion – then I “felt” my way out.

Message from the Artist: There is a passion and intimacy between mother and child – I sometimes imply it by saying I want to absorb my sons – because it’s hard to describe. Its strength is tactile, its pull gravitational, its emotion swells beneath my breast bone – I can’t describe it in spoken words, I may not be able to write it, I can only attempt to paint it – and infuse the essence into the finished piece. My son climbs into our bed every morning – he claims it’s his favorite time of the day and sighs loudly as he tucks his cold little feet between my shins for warmth. It’s sometimes the hardest part of the day for me because it means it’s near time to get up – sometimes – but it is such a delicious moment.
